How to Measure Your Table for a Tablecloth + Calculator

Getting the right size tablecloth comes down to two things: the size of your table top, and how much you want the cloth to hang over the edge. That overhang — known as the drop length — is what determines the final size you need to order.

This guide covers every table shape: rectangular, square, round, and oval. Follow the steps for your table, then use the calculator below to get your exact size.

A Note on Drop Length

The drop length is how far the tablecloth hangs below the table edge on each side. There’s no single right answer — it comes down to how you use your table and the look you’re going for.

20–30cm is the most popular range. At 20cm the cloth sits just below the table edge — clean and unfussy. At 30cm it drapes more generously without reaching guests’ laps.

Rectangular & Square Tables

Step 1: Set your table to its usual size

If your table extends, set it to the size you’ll be using most often when the tablecloth is in place. If you regularly use both sizes, you may want to order two cloths — one for each configuration.

Step 2: Measure the width & length

Run the tape measure across the short edge of the table, keeping it flush against the surface. Note the measurement in centimetres, then double-check by measuring the opposite edge.

Repeat along the long edge. Even if your table looks perfectly square, measure both sides to confirm — tables can be slightly off.

Make a note of these two measurements.

Step 3: Choose your drop length

Decide how much overhang you’d like on each side. We recommend 20–30cm as a starting point.

Step 4: Calculate your tablecloth size

Multiply your chosen drop length by 2 (to cover both sides), then add that total to both the width and length.

Example:

  • Table is 90cm × 180cm.
  • Drop length: 20cm – 20 × 2 = 40cm total
  • Width: 90 + 40 = 130cm
  • Length: 180 + 40 = 220cm
  • Order size: 130 × 220cm

Tip: Use a tape measure to visualise the drop length.

Round Tables

Step 1: Measure the diameter

Place the tape measure across the widest point of the table, passing through the centre. This is your diameter.

Step 2: Choose your drop length

A drop of 15–25cm works well for most round tables. Aim to keep the cloth above the knees of seated guests.

Step 3: Choose your drop length

Multiply your drop length by 2, then add it to the diameter.

Example:

  • Table diameter: 90cm.
  • Drop length: 20cm. 20 × 2 = 40cm total
  • Cloth size: 90 + 40 = 130cm diameter

Tip: Use a tape measure to visualise the drop length.

Oval Tables

Important: The oval tablecloths we supply have semi-circle ends, not a true elliptical curve. This suits most standard oval dining tables perfectly well, but it’s worth knowing before you order.

Step 1: Set your table to its usual size

If your table extends, set it to the size you’ll use most. A larger cloth used on a smaller table will result in uneven overhang at the ends.

Step 2: Measure the width & length

Measure across the widest point of the table — this will be at the centre.

Then measure between the two longest points of the oval.

Make a note of these two measurements.

Step 3: Choose your drop length

As with rectangular tables, 20–30cm is a good guide.

Step 4: Calculate your tablecloth size

Multiply your drop by 2 and add to both measurements.

Example:

  • Table is 90cm × 180cm.
  • Drop length: 20cm. 20 × 2 = 40cm total
  • Width: 90 + 40 = 130cm
  • Length: 180 + 40 = 220cm
  • Order size: 130 × 220cm

Tip: Use a tape measure to visualise the drop length.
